How to read a clothing composition label.
The label is evidence, not a verdict. Start with the percentages, keep garment components separate, and resist turning a fiber name into a universal quality score.
01 / The declared mix
Start with what is actually quantified.
A composition such as 70% cotton, 30% linen describes the fibers by weight in the named textile component. In the EU, textile composition is generally presented in decreasing percentage order. In the United States, most covered textile products also disclose generic fiber names and percentages by weight.
Read the largest percentage first, then notice whether a small addition may have a functional role. A modest elastane percentage, for example, can introduce stretch. That does not automatically make the garment better or worse; it changes the questions worth asking about recovery, feel, and care.
A fiber list tells you what is declared. It does not tell you how well the cloth was spun, woven, knitted, cut, or finished.
02 / Garment construction
Do not merge the shell, lining, and filling.
A jacket may show one composition for its outer shell, another for the lining, and another for padding or trim. Those components sit in different places and perform different jobs. Combining them into one invented average hides useful evidence.

03 / Interpretation
Read a blend as a set of trade-offs.
Instead of asking whether a fiber is “good,” ask what the blend may contribute to this specific garment. Cotton can be associated with absorbency; linen with a dry hand and visible creasing; wool with warmth; viscose with fluid drape; polyester with lower moisture absorbency and possible static. Construction and finishing can alter all of those tendencies.
Then connect the blend to the product’s role. A crisp shirt, fluid dress, base layer, and winter coat need different things. Your own sensitivity, care tolerance, climate, existing wardrobe, and expected use belong in the decision too.
04 / Boundaries
Know what the label cannot prove.
- Fit: percentages do not replace measurements, pattern cutting, or trying the garment.
- Durability: fiber content alone does not reveal yarn strength, fabric density, seam quality, abrasion resistance, or pilling performance.
- Feel: composition supports an estimate, but finish and construction can make similar blends feel different.
- Sustainability: a fiber name or recycled-content statement is not a complete environmental assessment or certification.
