How to understand fabric blends.

A blend is not a secret formula. Read the largest share first, investigate what the smaller fibers may contribute, and keep every claim tied to the specific cloth.

01 / Dominant share

Begin with the fiber that makes up most of the named component.

In the EU, a textile label generally lists fibers in decreasing percentage order. In the United States, covered textiles disclose generic fiber names and percentages by weight under the Textile Fiber Rule. A 70% cotton, 30% linen shell is therefore mostly cotton by declared weight; that is the factual starting point.

Do not translate that fact into a complete feel or performance prediction. Yarn, weave or knit, weight, finish, and garment construction can make two identical percentage lists behave differently.

Blend = percentage + component + construction + care + role

02 / Smaller additions

A low percentage can still be worth noticing.

A small elastane share may be added where stretch is intended. Polyamide, polyester, wool, silk, or other fibers can appear as smaller parts of a blend for many possible design or manufacturing reasons. The label tells you the amount—not the designer’s intent or the exact result.

Use cautious language: “may contribute,” “is associated with,” and “cannot verify” are more honest than promising a behavior from one number. If stretch matters, look for construction, product measurements, recovery, and fit evidence in addition to elastane content.

03 / Garment structure

Attach the blend to the correct part.

Separate components preserve the relationship between material and function. They also make care conflicts easier to see: the garment must be cared for as a whole, not as isolated fiber lists.

04 / Purchase decision

Compare blends using the same questions.

  • Which fiber dominates each relevant component?
  • Is a smaller addition connected to a need you actually have?
  • What does the retailer publish about knit or weave, weight, lining, finish, and stretch?
  • Do the care instructions fit your routine?
  • What similar blend already exists in your wardrobe, and how does it feel in use?
Percentages make products comparable. They do not make the answer universal.

When comparing two garments, keep missing fields visible. A detailed composition is stronger evidence than a marketing name such as “linen blend” with no percentages.
